Clinic Visit

What to expect

Genomic Medicine clinic appointments include evaluation by a physician  with expertise in genomics and pharmacogenomics and a genetic counselor. During the initial evaluation you will be asked  about your current problem, past illnesses, family medical history, education, eating, exercise and drinking habits, and other pertinent facts. This may be followed by a neurological and physical examination.

Next Generation DNA sequencing (NGS) is performed in a CLIA and/or CAP certified laboratory. Depending on the laboratory performing DNA analysis, a saliva or a blood sample will be required. Information gained using this advanced diagnostic tool is then applied to inform diagnostic, treatment and medical follow up decisions. On-going management will be coordinated by the patient’s referring physician.

What is neurocognitive testing?

Neurocognitive testing may be required. It involves “paper and pencil” tests to examine memory and thinking. These tests are usually administered by a qualified technician, who will present results to the doctor for interpretation.

How long is the visit?

The visit may be lengthy. Prepare to stay in the office for 2-3 hours.

Come with a family member or a caregiver

It is preferable to not come alone. Bring someone with you – a family member, a person who knows you well. If this is not possible, please let us know by calling 877 483 2071.

Bring all your medications

Bring all your medications, vitamins, supplements and over the counter, non-prescription medications.

Bring all your recent test results

Bring your latest laboratory test results. If laboratory tests have been recently ordered by your doctor, ask the doctor’s office to fax them to us at 951-275-8560. Please bring all imaging reports with raw images on a CD or other media, if available.

Diagnosis made when all tests are completed

Once all the test information has been reviewed by the doctor, a conference often involving family members or other closely related persons will be held. A genetic counsellor may be involved in various stages of this evaluation. The diagnosis, treatment and medical referral options will be discussed.
